How to Choose a Sectional You'll Still Love Next Year

A sectional is the biggest piece of furniture in most living rooms, and the one people second-guess most after buying. Get it right, and you've built the room around it. Get it wrong, and you're stuck with a sofa that fights your space every day. Here's how to choose one you'll love a year from now.

1. Measure your room before you fall in love

The single biggest mistake is shopping based on how a sectional looks in the showroom. Sectionals look smaller in big showrooms and bigger in small living rooms. Before you start, grab a tape measure and write down:

• The wall it'll sit against, total length.
• The depth of the room, from that wall to the opposite wall.
• Doorways, hallways, and stairs the sectional has to travel through to get into the room.
• Window placement, low windows behind a tall sectional back look strange.

Once you have the wall length, leave at least 3 feet of clear walkway on the open side of the room and 18″ between the sectional and your coffee table.

2. Pick the shape that fits your habits

Sectionals come in three main shapes:

• L-shape (most common): Great for square rooms. The chaise gives you a spot to stretch out without monopolizing the whole sofa.
• U-shape: Maximum seating, ideal if you host. Needs a deep room (typically 12′ deep minimum).
• Curved or modular: Floats well in open-plan rooms where the back of the sectional will be visible.

Then decide: do you want a left-facing or right-facing chaise? Stand in your room facing where the sectional will sit. If the long part of the L is on your left, you want a left-facing sectional.

3. Think about the cushions

Cushion fill changes the personality of the sofa more than people expect:

• Firm foam: Holds its shape, sits up tall. Best for daily-use family rooms.
• Down or down-blend: Softer, sink-in feel. Looks lived-in (in a good way) and you'll need to fluff it.
• Hybrid (foam core + down wrap): The sweet spot, holds shape but feels soft. Most modern sectionals use this.

4. Choose a fabric that matches your life

Velvet looks incredible but isn't pet-friendly. Linen breathes but stains. Performance fabric (sometimes called "easy-clean") repels spills and is the right call if you have kids or animals. Leather lasts forever if you condition it but needs maintenance, our care guide covers all of this.

5. Don't skip the test sit

This is why a showroom matters. Sit on the sectional for at least 10 minutes. Lean into the back. Stretch out on the chaise. Notice how your lower back feels and how easy it is to get up. A sectional that's perfect for a 6′ person can be awkward for a 5′2″ person.
